You want to take someone on the back, moped-style on a long seat. Is that actually allowed? In short, yes, but only if the bike is really built for that. Anyone who just puts someone on the luggage rack is wrong.
Two things determine if it is allowed: how the bike is built, and whether it stays within the pedelec limits. If you want to see immediately which models these are, look in our fatbike collection. Below you first read the rules.
Are you allowed to ride two on a fatbike?
In Germany, paragraph 21 of the StVO regulates who may ride on a bicycle. Two conditions apply simultaneously: the rider must be at least 16 years old, and the bike must be built and equipped for passenger transport. A luggage rack where you put someone does not meet this, even if it looks sturdy.
There is a separate rule for children. A child up to 7 years old may ride with someone at least 16 years old, on a suitable child seat, and the bike must prevent feet from getting caught in the spokes. A trailer for up to two children is also allowed.
A pedelec up to 25 km/h is legally considered a bicycle, so the same rules apply. It remains important that it is a real pedelec: 250 watts, pedal assistance up to 25 km/h, and no throttle that propels you above 6 km/h without pedaling. If your model goes faster, it is no longer a bicycle and license plates, insurance, and sometimes a driver's license come into play.
What to look for in a two-seater?
Whether a specific two-seater meets all technical requirements in detail cannot be said in general. Therefore, pay attention to a seat that is factory-installed, with fixed footrests, and check if the allowed load of your model can handle two people. The latter is listed in the specifications and is often overlooked.
With two people, the brakes become more important. Hydraulic disc brakes grip more powerfully and evenly than mechanical ones, and you notice that especially with extra weight. Rear suspension makes it much more comfortable for your passenger. And expect noticeably less range, because two people drain the battery faster than a solo ride.
Which models are set up for two people with us
Three models are described by us as suitable for two people. The Ouxi C80 MAX has a rear seat with footrests and, thanks to the dual battery, also the range you want with a passenger. The Ouxi V8 Ultra combines that with hydraulic brakes and dual suspension, exactly what extra weight demands. The V20 Cross is built narrower, a skinnybike, and is also indicated for two people.
Still unsure? Then calmly compare them in the fatbike collection or check out the skinnybikes. If you want to know exactly what a pedelec is first, read what is a pedelec.
