Knaap was founded in 2019 by two Dutch entrepreneurs from the scooter sector, as a response to scooter bans in city centers. The idea: an electric fatbike with a buddy seat, truly Dutch Design, premium finish. By now, the Knaap rides all over the Netherlands and is known as one of the most recognizable fatbikes in the streetscape. What makes a Knaap fatbike different

Three things stand out. First, the buddy seat. Every Knaap has a long saddle with footrests for a passenger, something you don’t get standard with most fatbike brands. Second is the build quality. A Bafang 250W motor, Samsung battery, hydraulic disc brakes, and an aluminum frame are standard on every model. No no-name parts. Third is the design. Clean lines, minimalist styling, and naming after world cities: AMS (Amsterdam), BCN (Barcelona), LON (London), NYC (New York). Recognizable from a distance. The range of 140 km with a Samsung 36V 15.6Ah battery is more than enough for most rides, even if you commute daily.

All Knaap fatbikes comply with Dutch law: 250W motor, pedal assistance up to 25 km/h, no throttle. No driver’s license, no license plate, no mandatory insurance, no helmet requirement (although one may be introduced for under 18s in 2027).

Which Knaap model suits you

The range is compact but varied enough to offer choice. The AMS X is the sporty urban model with a horizontal frame, lightweight aluminum, and hydraulic brakes. Suitable for daily commuting in the city. Available in black and blue. The LON has a low step-through (no bar across the frame), making it easier to get on, even if you’re wearing a skirt or dress. A great choice for those who prioritize comfort over a sporty look. Available in black and sand. The BCN combines urban design with rear suspension and has a higher seat, ideal if you often ride with a passenger. Black or dark green. The RTD and RTD X are the more adventurous models with dual suspension, longer range, and sturdier tires, designed for longer trips and off-road terrain.

Unsure between models? Price and usage are usually the deciding factors. The LON and AMS are in the entry-level range of the Knaap lineup, the BCN in the mid-range due to the rear suspension, and the RTD X at the top. All models have the same frame principle and the same motor quality, so you mainly choose based on entry level, equipment, and color.
