Fatbike locks: which ART level suits you?

You buy a good lock once. But the level you need depends on how and where you park your fatbike. ART certification is the leading standard in this. The number indicates how resistant a lock is to the most common break-in attempts, tested by an independent body. The higher the ART number, the heavier the lock and the better the protection. And also: the more it weighs and the more it costs. So the choice is not about "as high as possible," but about "what fits my situation." Someone who parks their fatbike at a station during the day has different needs than someone who leaves it outside at night. We have chain locks from AXA and SIMSON, available in ART 2, ART 3, and ART 4. Below is what you can expect per level.

The difference between ART 2, 3, and 4

ART 2 is the entry-level. Suitable for shorter parking periods in locations with a lower theft risk. Parking duration of a few hours, during the day, in a place where not many bikes are stolen: ART 2 does its job. It is also the minimum required level if you want to insure your fatbike through Gofatbike.

ART 3 offers more resistance. The lock withstands more tools and more force, such as bolt cutters and wrenches. This is the recommended level for city parking, busy bike racks, and situations where your fatbike is left unattended for longer periods. For most people in an urban environment, this is the most sensible choice.

ART 4 is the heaviest level in our range. Thicker chains, a sturdier cylinder, better resistance to professional tools. Useful if you regularly park your fatbike outside at night, in a location with a high theft risk, or if your insurer explicitly requires this level. Not necessary for everyone, but if applicable, there is no good alternative.

AXA and SIMSON: what you can expect from each

SIMSON makes chain locks in the ART 2 and ART 3 segments. Solid material, sharp price. The locks do exactly what you expect: secure locking, reliable unlocking, sturdy enough for daily use. If you don't want to pay more than necessary, SIMSON offers a solid base.

AXA goes a step further in both price and security. Their range goes up to ART 4, with chains that are clearly heavier and a locking mechanism that is better secured. You notice this when you carry the lock daily. An AXA ART 4 lock is significantly heavier than an ART 2 model. Do you use your lock at a fixed location, like at home or a fixed parking spot at work? Then the weight is less relevant. Do you change location every day and always carry the lock? Then the weight literally matters in your choice.

Fatbike lock and your bike insurance

Do you insure your fatbike through Gofatbike? Then two requirements apply: an ART 2 certified chain lock and a Loqater tracking device in the bike. That tracking device is required in addition to the lock, not instead of it. Without both parts, you do not meet the insurance conditions. The tracking device helps recover your fatbike if it is stolen.

Do you already have your own bike insurance? Then check your policy conditions for the minimum ART level accepted. Insurers have different requirements. Some accept ART 2, others require ART 3 or ART 4, depending on the purchase value, your place of residence, or postal code area. A lock that does not meet the policy requirement can mean a theft claim is not paid out. Unsure which level your insurer requires? Always check this before you buy.
