You buy one because your bike doesn’t fit in the hallway, because you want to take it on the train, or because you don’t want to depend on a rental bike rack at the campsite. Which type of electric folding bike suits you?

Within the collection, you’ll see two types. ENGWE makes folding bikes with wider tires, think 20x4 inch. These are actually fatbike folding bikes: more stable on wet roads, a bit more grip, and they feel sturdier. The JOBOBIKE models are lighter, with narrower tires and a sleeker city frame. Those are easier to carry if you have to go up stairs or put them in the trunk. Which is better? It depends. If you mostly ride short distances in the city and want to carry the bike often, lighter is nicer. If you take it on vacation or ride longer distances, wider tires and a bigger battery are worth considering. Both types have pedal assist up to 25 km/h and are fully legal on public roads, no license plate or helmet required.

Range and battery: what should you watch out for?

The battery is the first thing you look at when comparing an e-folding bike. The models in this collection offer between 40 and 120 kilometers on a single charge, depending on the model and the level of assistance you choose. You get the furthest on the lowest setting, while the highest setting helps the most against headwinds but drains the battery faster. Charging takes on average 4 to 6 hours. For commuting, that's fine: charge it in the evening and it's full in the morning. If you take the bike to the campsite or in the camper, the capacity in Wh (watt-hours) is the number to watch. The higher that number, the further you can go. A model with 400 Wh or more is suitable for longer trips. For shorter rides around the city, a smaller battery is sufficient and also lighter.

Foldable yet sturdy enough

A folding bike must do two things at once: be compact enough to carry and sturdy enough for daily riding. The locking mechanisms on these models are located in the middle of the frame and at the handlebar stem. That sounds simple, but the difference is in how tightly those locks click into place. Nobody wants a bike that wobbles while riding.
