STOER Bikes fatbike: a Dutch brand with a different technical base

STOER Bikes is a Dutch brand that has deliberately chosen a different setup than most e-fatbikes. While most fatbikes under €3,000 use a chain, the STOER models use a Gates CDX belt and an internal shifting system. This combination determines in practice how much maintenance you need, how smoothly the bike rides, and how long it lasts. The range consists of two models: the Urban X and the S1+. Both have a 250W BAFANG motor, pedal assist up to 25 km/h, and an aluminum frame. The range is 60 to 100 kilometers, depending on the chosen support level. Belt drive: what does that mean in practice?

A Gates CDX belt works differently than a chain. It requires no lubrication, wears much slower, and makes almost no noise while riding. It performs almost the same in dry and wet weather. This means concretely that you need to take a STOER Bikes fatbike to the bike shop much less often than a comparable bike with a chain. Over a period of three years, this can make a significant difference in maintenance costs. One caveat: a belt cannot be shortened like a chain. If you were to replace the frame, you would need a belt that fits exactly. Under normal use, this is not an issue, but it’s good to know.

Automatic shifting: convenient or unnecessary?

The internal gear hub of the Urban X and S1+ shifts automatically based on your riding behavior. You don't need to operate any shifters. The system has two gears and adapts to your pace. For those switching from a regular city bike, it feels immediately familiar. No clicking or grinding when starting, no wrong gear when stopping. The shifting system is fully enclosed, so rain and dirt hardly affect it. This is also a reason why it requires less maintenance than a traditional derailleur. If you prefer to shift yourself and want more gears, another fatbike is a better fit.

Urban X or S1+: what is the difference?

The price difference between the Urban X (€2,999) and the S1+ (€2,895) is small, but they look different. The Urban X has a sleeker, more urban frame design, available in Green, Navy Blue, Gray, Sky Blue, and Taupe. The S1+ offers a bit more color variety: Black, Gray, Sand, Green, and Orange. Technically, they are very similar: same motor, same belt drive, same shifting logic. The maximum load capacity for both models is 180 kg including luggage. Unsure based purely on design?
