Monkeybike, a custom longtail fatbike for the family

Monkeybike comes from Nijlen in Belgium, where the brand designs the bikes itself and assembles them in its own workshop. The MonkeyTail is the only model and exists only in this one form: a longtail e-bike with 20 inch fatbike tires, an extended frame, and a long flat luggage rack behind the saddle. There is room for two to three children, or for a whole week's groceries. For those who don't want a classic cargo bike but still need the transport capacity that a cargo bike normally provides, a longtail is often the more practical choice. Lighter, shorter, easier to store, and simpler to steer through traffic. If you're unsure between a regular bike with a child seat and a longtail, it helps to first consider how much you really carry. For one child, a regular child seat is often still fine. From two children, or if you pack it full every day, the extended frame is a serious step up.

Eleven colors, one model

The entire Monkeybike range consists of one bike in different colors. That sounds limited, but it is intentional. You don’t choose between models or versions, only between shades. The calm options are Black, Beige, and Elephant Gray. For those who want something more striking, you can choose Banana Yellow, Tropical Pink, Flamingo Pink, or Lilac Lagoon. In between are Sky Blue, Ocean Blue, Green, and Beasty Brown. You can order any variant under the same conditions. Delivery time is usually 1 to 2 weeks, except for colors in stock, then the bike can sometimes be at your door tomorrow. Good to know: the color is in the powder coating of the frame, not in stickers or foil. If it scratches later, you can have it touched up in the same shade.

Specs of the Monkeybike MonkeyTail in plain language

The MonkeyTail runs on a 250W motor with pedal assist up to 25 km/h. This keeps it fully legal for public roads, even with children on the back. The battery has 750 Wh and according to the manufacturer provides around 80 km range with normal use. With passengers on the back and some hills, that number drops; with just yourself and some groceries, you can go further. The frame is made of steel and therefore weighs a bit more than an aluminum version. The advantage of steel: it welds well and handles minor bumps against a post without much damage. The maximum loaded weight including bike, passengers, and cargo is 140 kg. So calculate how much you really carry before putting everyone on the back. The tires are 20 inches and wide, which keeps the bike stable on bumpy roads and when riding up a curb at an angle.

Accessories that specifically fit the MonkeyTail

Besides the bike itself, Monkeybike offers all the gear you need for a longtail. The front rack mounts in front of the handlebars for extra cargo, the footrests click onto the rear frame for passengers, and the backrest cushion gives children extra support on longer rides. For on the go, there are two sizes of pannier bags that hang over the rear rack. For storage in the shed, there is a bike cover and a storage bag for loose parts. If you leave your bike outside and expect rain, you can choose between the half rain cover, which only covers the saddle and rack, or the full rain cover that goes over the entire bike. If you order the accessories together with the bike, everything comes in one shipment. If you order something later, it usually ships separately. Parts remain available as long as the model exists, so you don’t have to worry about stock for a new rain cover.
