The Cangoo cargo bike in brief
Cangoo is a Dutch family business fully focused on cargo bikes. No e-bikes, no scooters, just cargo bikes. On this page, you see the Cangoo cargo bikes we supply at Gofatbike, currently the Buckle Up in black as a tricycle with four seats in the box. The bike is built around stability and family use, with the Ananda M100 mid-motor and a 700Wh battery for rides up to about 60 kilometers. Unsure between a two-wheeler and a three-wheeler? Then this model is an interesting middle ground. Three wheels give you peace of mind when stopped, especially if the box is full of children. The Buckle Up is delivered boxed or assembled, your choice.
Why the Cangoo cargo bike has three wheels
Three wheels may seem excessive until you’ve tried getting four children out of the back at once. A two-wheeled cargo bike then needs to be put on the stand or leaned against a wall. A tricycle just stays upright. At traffic lights, you don’t have to put a foot down, and at the school gate, you can calmly secure children without the bike tipping over. The riding feel is different from a regular bike. In sharp turns, the Cangoo cargo bike doesn’t lean, so you steer more actively with your arms. It’s wise to practice a bit in a quiet place before your first ride with passengers. After a week, it feels like second nature.
Box for four, two seats with three-point belts
The Buckle Up fits four children, and two seats come standard with magnetic three-point belts. Similar to a car seatbelt: you fasten it with one hand and release it with one hand. No fumbling with clips at child level, no frustration when leaving. The box itself is made of EPP foam with a wooden frame around it. EPP is the same material as many child car seats, soft inside but hard to dent. An accident with the box rarely results in major damage. Additionally, there are headlights with 360-degree wide coverage, a rear light that lights up extra when you brake, and the bike has cargo bike certification for public roads. Not unimportant if you’re cycling back in the evening.
What you see under the bike
Under the bottom bracket is an Ananda M100 mid-motor with 95 Nm of torque. That’s a serious number and you especially notice it when you want to go up a bridge with a full load or start moving from a standstill. The Enviolo HD gear hub shifts steplessly, so no grinding and no clicking. You turn the grip and the transmission adjusts automatically. The 700Wh battery provides about 60 km range, enough for most weekly routines: school runs, grocery shopping, a trip to the park. Hydraulic disc brakes with parking function keep everything under control, even when the bike is fully loaded. The color display has a USB port, so you can charge your phone during the ride as well. Charging the battery takes 5 to 7 hours.
For whom this bike is not practical
The Cangoo Buckle Up is not a small bike. With a weight of 50 kg and three wheels, it requires sturdy storage, and it usually doesn’t fit in a bike rack. If you don’t have a shed or garage, it becomes difficult. You also notice the weight on curbs, steep cellar slopes, or narrow hallways. For one person without children, a tricycle is also a bit overkill. A two-wheeler is more agile and quicker off at traffic lights. But as soon as passengers get in the cargo box, the picture changes: then you regain the stability you miss on a two-wheeler. If you’re still unsure between types, it helps to also take a look at other cargo bikes.
